Each member of our team designed and created their own unique top for the collection. I personally designed and constructed my bustier top from concept to finished garment, contributing my individual vision to the collective Gatsby-inspired story.
For our school project 'Designers as Inspiration' we were given the opportunity to create a commercial collection consisting of 5 tops. We found our muse in the world of The Great Gatsby, drawing from the opulence, extravagance and magnetic energy of the Roaring Twenties. To elevate this concept, we turned to the powerful aesthetic of fashion house Balmain, known for its striking silhouettes, rich detailing and strong femininity. Each team member created a party top that reflected both the glamour of the 1920s and the modern empowered woman of today.
Our collection is made for women who are elegant, confident and a little mysterious. A woman who knows the art of allure, who speaks volumes with a glance and who carries herself with poise and intention. These are the women who don't follow the crowd but their own rhythm.
Every top in our collection was thoughtfully created to enhance the female form without compromising comfort or movement. We explored a variety of silhouettes, some fluid and draping softly over the body, others structured and form-fitting to accentuate natural curves.
We selected a colour palette that reflects both timeless beauty and bold luxury: deep black, soft white and luminous gold. Rich fabrics such as silk and satin are paired with hand-finished details like white pearls and golden buttons, elevating each piece into something more than just a garment.
My own design contribution to this collection was a bustier top. I envisioned a piece that captures the free-spirited glamour of the 1920s, while also feeling relevant to today's fashion-forward woman. I chose a luxurious cream-coloured silk, soft to touch and luminous under dimmed lights. I shaped the bustier with a flattering, feminine silhouette and added long silk fringes that sway with movement.
This piece is designed for the woman who doesn't need to reveal much to be unforgettable. She's bold without being loud and sensual without being obvious. She is the mystery in the room, the one you can't quite look away from.
