Behind the Scenes at Bleckmann: Where Fashion Meets Logistics

Visit to the Bleckmann logistics facility

I never really thought about what happens after you click "order" on a clothing website. Like, where does it actually go before it shows up at your door? Our class got to visit Bleckmann, a big fashion logistics company, and it turns out there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than I expected.

More Than Just a Warehouse

Before we went, I pictured a warehouse with boxes on shelves and forklifts driving around. Pretty boring, right? But Bleckmann was nothing like that. The place was huge and everything was way more organized and high tech than I imagined.

They handle the whole supply chain for big fashion brands in Europe. So that means receiving the goods, storing them, picking and packing orders, and shipping everything out. They also deal with returns, which is apparently a massive job in fashion. Every returned item needs to be checked, repackaged, and made ready to sell again. There's a lot that goes into it.

Technology That Blew My Mind

The tech side really surprised me. They have automated sorting systems and software that tracks every single item in real time. An order can go from the shelf to a shipping label in just a few minutes. The system knows exactly where everything is at all times. For me, as a fashion student, it was a bit of a wake up call. You can design the most beautiful collection, but if it doesn't reach the customer on time and in good condition, none of it matters.

I used to think logistics was the boring side of fashion. Now I think it might be one of the most important parts.

Sustainability Behind the Scenes

They're also doing quite a bit for sustainability. They optimize delivery routes to lower emissions, use eco friendly packaging, and help brands handle returns better so less stuff goes to waste. That last part especially stood out to me because fast fashion already creates so much unsold stock.

I got to talk to one of the team leads, and she told us how they work with brands to predict demand more accurately. That means less overproduction and fewer clothes ending up in landfills. I thought that was really cool, because it's sustainability happening in a place you wouldn't expect it.

◇ ◇ ◇

I went home that afternoon thinking about fashion differently. There's so much more to it than designing and making clothes. Getting products to people, dealing with returns, doing it all in a way that's not wasteful. That all matters too. This visit made me realize that if I want to work in fashion strategy, I need to understand the whole process. And honestly, I'm glad I do now, because it's way more interesting than I thought it would be.
